Back from Japan ・日本に行ってきました

It's been almost 2 months from the last posting... I was in Japan from mid Sep. and came back a few days ago. So much has happened! Where should I begin... Oh, my last day at the market went well. I had a busy yet fun filled summer thanks to the market. Can't wait for the next season. I had another awesome pottery lesson with Meaghan before leaving for Japan. She showed me how to throw bowls, how to use ribs and other tools, and more on centering. I will glaze and fire the pieces I made during the lesson, as soon as kids and I get over jet lag :-) Japan trip was so much fun! We took a trip on a bullet train to the western Japan to visit friends, and Ron's surf buddy took us along for a surfing trip to Izu. We spent rest of the time to see friends and family. They are the ones who made this trip so special. I want to thank every one of them. Another special person I met was Mr. Munakata, who not only teaches pottery classes, but mixes and sells his own glaze. My best friend, Rica, has been taking his class for 12 years. I was stunned by the number of different glazes he creates. Over 150 beautiful colors! I ordered a few and brought them back to the states (All his glaze is made to order! Mr. Munakata, who used to be a chemist at a pharmaceutical company, says that he doesn't keep them in stock because glaze works better if it's fresh). Since the glaze is made to work best at slightly higher temperature (cone 7 or 8, which Japanese potters typically use), I need to experiment a bit. Can't wait to test them out! I need to add a little on Mr. Munakata: an awesome potter, glaze maker, who can also read bar codes... He has the "mad scientist" look to him, and he is always working on gazillions of projects, from making preserved flowers to collecting model trains. He is so kind and charming, that anyone who meets his would be hooked :-) I am so looking forward to email him the result of my glaze experiments. I hope the jet lag will go away soon...

前回の書き込みから２ヶ月もたってしまいました。　９月中旬から１ヵ月半、日本に里帰りしていました。いろんなことがあって、どこから始めたら良いものやら、、、　マーケットの最終日はまずまずの出来でした。　マーケットのおかげで、忙しいながらも楽しい夏でした。　来年のシーズンが始まるのが楽しみだな。　日本へ発つ前に、ミーガンさんのレッスンを受けることもできました。　大きめのボールをへらなどを使って作るやりかたや、中心をとるときのコツを教えていただきました。　私と子供達の時差ぼけが治り次第、そのときに作った作品を焼きます。　楽しみです！　日本の旅はと～っても楽しかったです。　新幹線で関西のお友達に会いに行ったり、Ron の親友が伊豆までのサーフィン旅行に連れて行ってくれたりで幕を開け、その後は懐かしい友達や家族と過ごすことができました。　友達・家族の皆さんのおかげでこの旅がとても楽しく思い出深いものとなりました。　皆さん、ありがとうございました。　もう一つ、特別な出会いがありました。　むなかた先生は、陶芸教室を教えるだけでなく、御自身で釉を作って日本中に販売していらっしゃいます。　私の親友、りかちゃんも、１２年ずっと先生の教室へ通っています。　先生がお作りになる釉の種類の多さにびっくりしました。　１５０以上あるそうです！　私も気に入った３色と化粧土を購入して、オレゴンに持ってかえりました。　（むなかた先生の釉は注文があってから作られます。　以前製薬会社の技術者であった先生は、釉は新鮮なほうが良いので、在庫は置かない、とおっしゃっていました）　釉はアメリカで一般的に焼かれる温度よりも高い温度で一番良い結果が出るように作られているので、（日本ではアメリカよりも高い温度で陶器を焼くそうです）私の粘土と温度に合うかどうかの実験が必要です。　どんな結果がでるか楽しみだな！　ちょっとここで、、、素晴らしい陶芸家であり、釉作りの名人であり、そしてバーコードも読んでしまうむなかた先生について書きたいと思います。　先生は御茶ノ水博士のようなルックスで、いつもたくさんのプロジェクトに楽しそうに熱中しています。　私が訪ねたときには、プリザーブドフラワー（綺麗です）作りや、鉄道模型（かなり本格的です）を見せてくださいました。　とっても優しくて、魅力たっぷりの先生には、会う人みんなぐっときてしまいます。　これから釉の実験結果をメールでやりとりするのが楽しみです。　スタジオで作業ができるように、時差ぼけ治ってくれ～。　

One more week! and about a skunk ・ 残り１週間! そしてスカンクのこと

I made some new stuff, but no pics yet... I had the best sales at Sunday market last week, but this week was very slow. Poring rain didn't help, either... I decided to do one more week of the market, and it will be my last day of this season. It has been a lot of fun, so I would miss it when I'm done. By the way, there is a gigantic skunk visiting our back yard in the middle of the night. A few times in the past week, I saw him running across the yard, startled, when I came out of my studio. He/she was HUGE! About the size of a beagle dog.　If you have seen one, you know they are really cute creatures. Just like the ones in Disney movies. However, I don't care how cute they are... I don't want to be sprayed! Ever since I saw him(her), I'm a little scared to go in and out of my studio in the dark. Anybody out there know a good way to deal with them, without harming them?

また新しい作品を作ったのですが、写真がまだありません。　サンデーマーケットでは先週、今までで最高の売り上げだったのですが、今週はとっても暇でした。　大雨が時々降ってきたのも理由の一つでした、、、　来週（９月７日）にあと１回だけこの夏最後のマーケットに出店します。　とても楽しくやってきたので、終わっちゃったら寂しくなるだろうな、、、　ところで、我が家の裏庭にどでかいスカンクが夜な夜なやってきています。　ここ１週間で２回くらい、私が車庫のスタジオから出てくるときにびっくりして走っている姿を見ました。　それが本当に大きいんです！　たぶんビーグル犬くらいの大きさです。　見たことある方は御存知でしょうが、スカンクって、ディズニー映画に出てくるのみたいに可愛い生き物なんです。　（黒と白で、ふさふさのしっぽがついてます）　しか～し、どんなに可愛くても、おならはかけられたくない！　（かけられると何日も匂いが消えなかったりします）　我が家に来ていたスカンクを見てからというもの、夜中に車庫に出入りする時にちょっとドキドキしてしまいます。 スカンクに危害が加わらないような良い対処のしかたを御存知な方は、ぜひ教えてくださいませ。

Best lesson ever!! ・ 最高のろくろレッスン

Sunday market was slow this week... Sales wasn't very good. BUT, something really awesome happened after the market. There are a couple of potters, Renee and Meaghan, who sells at the same market. They both have 30 years of experiences on a wheel and make beautiful pieces. Each of them has very unique style, and I have been admiring their work. I had asked them gazillions of pottery related questions, and they gave me so many great tips. On Sunday, they offered me a lesson at their new studio!! Making a long story short, it was the best lesson I had ever had. From centering (the most tricky part of wheel throwing for a beginner like me) to shaping, I learned sooooo much. Some of the techniques I learned would have taken years for me to figure out by myself. I appreciate their generosity so much, and I don't know how I can thank them enough. I'm so fortunate to find these wonderful teachers. I'm going to practice, practice, and practice! Someday, I want to make pieces Renee and Meaghan can be proud of. 今週のマーケットは人出も少なく売り上げもイマイチでした、、、　しか～し！　マーケットの後にとってもよいことがありました。　同じマーケットに出店している２人の陶芸家（ルネーさんとミーガンさん）はそれぞれ３０年くらいの陶芸暦があり、それぞれ特有のスタイルを持っていて、素敵な作品をお作りになります。　マーケットでお会いして以来、数え切れないほどの陶芸に関する質問をして いますが、そのたびに丁寧に答えてくださり、たくさんの手法を教えてくださいました。　今週のマーケット後は、お二人の新しいスタジオで実際にろくろのレッスンをしてくださいました！手短に言いますと、今まで受けた中で最高のレッスンでした。　中心をとること（私のような初心者には一番難しいことです）から形付けまで、たっくさんのことを教えていただきました。　あのレッスンで学んだことを私が一人で見出そうとしたら、きっと何年もかかったと思います。　彼女達のやさしさ・熱心さがとてもありがたく、一体どうしたらお礼の気持ちを表現できるのかわからないです。　こんな素晴らしい師匠に会えて、本当に嬉しいです。　とにかく修行をつんで、いつの日か、お二人が誇りに思ってくれるような作品を作れるようになるぞ！！　ミーガンさんの作品は、www.yellowdogclay.net 、ルネーさんの作品は、www.wildprairie.com でご覧になれます。　　　

New stuff! ・ 最近の新作

It was another good day at the market this week :-) Some of the new pieces were sold before I could take pictures of them (no, I'm not complaining!), but here are my recent stuff. Handprint tiles are selling well, especially these new designs. ($15/each) The necklaces are $7/each, and they are cute. A couple of customers bought them as soon as I put them out for display. The idea for necklaces came from my dear friend, Rica. (Arigatou!) Also, idea for the "no soliciting" sign ($18) came from a customer. The dog paw tile ($15) was another vendor's idea. I really love all these awesome ideas coming from other creative brains. The second bottom right pic shows a set of bowls and tea cups. (bowls are $15/each, cups are $14/each). Cups are curved with a vegetable peeler to give them a little texture. Green sushi plate set on the bottom left is $25 (plate, 2 dipping dishes, chopsticks, and chopstick rests), and green tea cups are $13/each. I enjoy making new stuff, but I'm not making them fast enough... I'm so happy that the sales are growing, but my inventory is getting smaller and smaller as I sell. I wish I can split myself into two, so that I can spend more time in the studio without sacrificing my time with kids.

今週のマーケットも好調でした！　新作のいくつかは写真を撮る前に売れてしまいましたが、他の新作を御紹介します。　手形タイルはありがたいことに好評ですが、特にこのデザインが売れています。　（１枚１５ドル）　ネックレスは＄７です。　なかなか可愛いくできました。　マーケットではテーブルに出したとたんに２人のお客様が買ってくださいました。　ネックレスのアイデアは私の親友、りかちゃんから、゛No　Soliciting　（押し売り禁止）”壁掛け（＄１８）のアイデアはお客様から、犬の足跡タイル（＄１５）はマーケットのペット用品を売っている人からいただいたアイデアでした。　いろんなアイデアを皆さんのクリエイティブな脳みそからいただけるのはとても嬉しいです。　右下の写真はお茶碗と湯のみのセットです。（茶碗は一つ１５ドル、湯のみは一つ１４ドル）　湯のみは手触りを面白くするために、野菜の皮むき器で削ってみました。　左下の寿司皿セット（皿・小皿２つ・箸・箸置き）は＄２５、お揃いの湯のみは一つ＄１３です。　新しいものを作るのは楽しくて大好きなのですが、もっと効率よく作らなければ、、、　売れることはとっても嬉しいのですが、そのたびに在庫がどんどん減ってしまい、生産が追いつかない状況です。　子供との時間を犠牲にせずに、スタジオでもっと時間が過ごせるように、自分を２つに割れたらいいんだけどな、、、　ドラエモンが欲しい。　

Good week & bad week ・ 良い週とダメな週

I can't believe it's already August! It seems like the time goes by faster as I age... There isn't enough time for all the things I want to do. I only have a few more times at this sunday market. It's been a lot of fun and I've learned so much. I think one of the most important things to remember is that there is a good week and bad week. Last week was a bad week... It was so slow that I had a hard time staying awake. Sales was way down, and so was my mojo. But I had a great day today :-) I was also happy to see a couple of customers came back to buy more. I've made some new items, but I didn't have time to take pics. This picture shows my magnets. They are cute and a lot of fun to make, priced $2~4/piece.

もう８月だなんて信じられません、、、　年をとるごとに時間の流れが速くなるような、、、（汗）　やりたいことが沢山あるのに時間が無いです。　この夏のマーケット参加も残すところ３回。　楽しいし沢山学びました。　中でも覚えていかないといけない事で大切なのは、゛良い日とダメな日がある”ということでしょうか。　先週はダメでした、、、　閑古鳥鳴いていて居眠りしそうでした。　売り上げも私のがんばれ魂もドドーンと下がってしまいました（涙）　でも今日はとっても良い日でした。　以前のお客様が再度お買い上げくださったのも嬉しかったです。　人生、山あり谷ありっていうことですね。　うん。　新商品をいくつか作ったのですが、写真がまだありません。　この写真はマグネットです。　かわいいし、作るのも楽しくて気に入っています。　お値段は２ドル～４ドルです。　

About my family ・ 家族について

Today was the 5th day at the Sunday Market. It was a good day!

It makes me happy to see the sales growing, but also it feels great when customers are happy with my products. To tell you the truth, there are some days when I feel too tired to work in the studio late at night... But when I think of the awesome feeling, I can keep going. Another thing that gives me energy is my family. Watching our kids grow (my son has just started walking last week!) makes me want to grow, too! AND, I could not have even started this pottery endeavor without my husband's support. Thank you, Ron! I am making new stuff this week. I should be able to show them soon.

今日はマーケット５日目でした。　とっても良い日でした！　売り上げが伸びているのも嬉しいことですが、お客様が私の作品を気に入ってくれるのが本当に嬉しいです。　正直言って、夜中にスタジオで仕事をするのがつらい日もあるのですが、この嬉しさを思うと元気が出ちゃいます。　私のもう一つの元気の源は家族です。　子供達が成長していく姿を見ていると（息子は先週歩きはじめました！）私も一緒に成長したくなります。　そして、忘れてならないのが、パートナーのサポートがなかったら、そもそも陶芸もなにも始められなかっただろうな、、、ということです。　ありがとうよ、Ron!　今週はまた新しいものをいくつか作っています。　もうすぐここでお見せできると思います。

New stuff ・ 最近作ったもの

Today was 4th week of the Sunday Market. I'm very happy that the sales are growing slowly but surely each time :-) I've made a few new stuff and I like them a lot. These business card holders ($10) are very cute. I would like to see them at sushi restautants or doctor's offices. Those plastic ones are too boring, right? Sushi plate set on the second pic ($25) turned out really pretty. I discovered this cool color by accident. Glazing is always a hit & miss, but this one was a big hit! I made these utencil stands on the third picture ($20~30) on a request from a customer. I made them heavier than normal, so they won't tip over easily.

今日はマーケットの４週目でした。　すこ～しずつですが、確実に売り上げが伸びているのが嬉しいです。　ここ２週間で新しく作ったものの写真です。　名刺立て（１０ドル）は可愛くできました。　おすし屋さんや、ドクターのオフィスに置いてほしいな～。　だってよくあるプラスチックのはつまらないですよね。　２枚目の写真の寿司セット（２５ドル）は綺麗な色に仕上がりました。　この色は偶然発見できたもので、嬉しかったです。　うわぐすりは、当たりハズレがいろいろですが、今回は大当たりでした。　３枚目の写真のオタマやフライ返しを立てるものは、お客様のリクエストで作ったものです。　（２０～３０ドル）　沢山立ててもひっくり返らないように少し重く作りました。
