Renee's One Woman Show was awesome! Lots of customers and great music/food/drink. I added a piece in my collection, too. Her bowls are amazingly thin and beautiful. We get to see more of her work at the Ceramic Showcase at the Oregon Convention Center on April 3o, May 1, and 2nd. The Showcase is the largest pottery show in North America. I am leaving this week to visit Japan for 6 weeks. Kids and I are very excited to see friends and family there. By the way, my kids thinks that my job is "to make and sell cups". When we found a book called "A Cup for Everyone"at the library, they just fell in love with it. The author is a young Japanese artist, Yusuke Yonezu. It's a great book! We loved it so much that we had to get our own copy. In the book, Pucca, a little penguin boy, makes beautiful cups that look like his friends. My daughter was very inspired and made one herself. Renee's One Woman Show ・ ルネーの展示会

I just want to spread the word! Renee is having her One Woman Show on April 1st, Thursday at the Local Discoveries (1627 NE Alberta St, Portland). The reception is held from 5pm to 9pm. There will be her new wonderful creations and a classical guitarist, Michael Baker, accompanied by hors d'oeuvre. It will be fun :-) I visited her studio this week and was amazed by the quality and quantity of new art work she has been working on. Can't wait!

今日はルネーの展示会のお知らせです。　4月1日、木曜日にローカル・ディスカバリー（1627　NE Alberta St. Portland) にて午後5時から9時までレセプションが行われます。　彼女の素敵な新作がたっぷり見られるうえに、クラシックギター奏者のマイケル・ベーカーの演奏、オードブルなどをお楽しみいただけます。　楽しみだな～♪　今週、ルネーのスタジオを訪ねてみましたが、彼女が手がけている新作の質と量にびっくりしてしまいました。　待ちきれません。

Clay is reborn! ・ よみがえれ！ 粘土よ！

Spring is finally here... almost. I'm so happy that it's getting comfortable to work in the studio. No more frozen clay! Talking about the clay, it's so nice that clay can be recycled. All the scrap clay can be hydrated and reconstituted to create more stuff! All those poor bowls that collapsed or flew off the wheel during throwing, and even the shavings from trimming can be reborn. The first pic shows the dry scrap (on the right) and the hydrated goo (on the left). When the goo is placed on a plaster, moisture gets sucked out of it, and after some kneading on the plaster, you have perfectly usable clay :-) No waste is a great thing! 春がやっと来ました、、、って言うのはまだ早いかな。　スタジオでの作業がずいぶん楽にできるようになりました。　凍った粘土ともさよならよ！　粘土といえば、、、嬉しいことに、粘土ってリサイクルできるんです。　作業中に出たクズ粘土は全て再度水に浸してもどし、再構成されて新しい作品を作るのに使えるのです！　ろくろの上で潰れたり、ろくろに振り飛ばされたりしたかわいそうな器達、、、そして削りの時に出た鰹節のようなカスまでもが生まれ変わることができるのです。　最初の写真の右にあるのが乾いた粘土クズ、左が水に浸してあるドロドロ粘土です。　このドロドロを石膏の上にねかせて水分を取り除き、石膏の上でこねるとあ～ら不思議、ちゃんとした粘土の出来上がり～♪　無駄が無いのは良いことですよね。　他の写真は最近作ったものです。

My first retail opportunity ・ お店にデビュー

Again, thanks to my teacher/ friend Renee, I got my first retail opportunity! Renee introduced me to the owner of Local Discoveries, Julie. The shop is located in the heart of the Alberta Arts District in NE Portland, right next to a bunch of artist's studio. The shop is full of handmade products by local artists, including jewelries, paintings, pottery, clothes, woodwork, soy candles, wonderful goat's milk soaps, and more. Please stop by when you are in the neighborhood. There is a fun street festival on the last Thursday of the month, too.

私の師匠、ルネーさんの紹介で初・お店デビューをはたすことができました！　先日、ルネーを介してローカル・ディスカバリーのオーナー、ジュリーさんにお会いすることができました。　お店はノース・イースト・ポートランドのアルベルタ・アート・ディストリクトにあります。　隣にはたくさんのアーティストのスタジオがあります。　お店には地元アーティストによるいろいろな手作り作品( アクセサリー・絵画・洋服・木の工芸作品・キャンドル・ヤギのミルクで作られた石鹸などなど）が売られています。　御近所にいらした際にはぜひお立ち寄りください。　毎月最後の木曜日にはこのストリートでフェスティバルもありますよ。　　

Hooked! ・ 最近のはまりもの

Yet again, winter came... and everything froze. Clay, glaze, and even wax got frozen. My studio/garage was way too cold, so I took some time off from pottery, and I got hooked on crocheting :-) First, like everyone else would, I made scarves and hats for my family, then I discovered "amigurumi". They are stuffed crochet animals. The first pic shows my very first amigurumi bunny. Then, I made the bear boy & girl upon my kid's request. Then, I made three bear brothers for my MIL's birthday. I can't stop myself. When I started to get worried that there will be a huge army of animals by the time spring comes, the outside temperature finally became reasonable for me to work in my studio. This week, I was finally back in my studio. Getting my hands in the clay felt so good. Today, my teacher (A.K.A. "pot coach") Renee, gave me another awesome lesson on how to throw bowls. Renee is an excellent teacher. If you are interested in a private pottery lesson with Renee, please let me know. She currently teaches a few students, and there are a couple of spots left.

またやってきました冬、、、そして全てが凍りました。　今年は粘土だけでなく、釉やワックスまで凍りました。　車庫にあるスタジオは寒すぎて、作業ができる状態ではなかったので少し陶芸をお休みして、かぎ針編みにはまっていました♪　まずは世間の皆さんがするように、私も家族のマフラーや帽子を編み、それから発見してしまいました、、、編みぐるみ！　最初の写真は編みぐるみ第1号のウサギちゃん（娘はりなちゃんと命名）。　そして子供達のリクエストに応えてクマの男の子・女の子を作り、先日は義理ママのお誕生日プレゼントにクマ3兄弟を作りました。　誰か止めて(汗）　春が来る頃には家中動物だらけになるのでは、、、と心配し始めた矢先に、やっと寒さが和らいで、スタジオで作業ができるくらいになりました。　今週やっと陶芸を再開。　粘土こねるのが気持ちよかった～。　今日は私の恩師、ルネーさんが大きめのボールの作り方について教えてくれました。　ルネーはとっても教えるのが上手です。　ルネーの陶芸個人レッスンに興味がある方は私に知らせてください。　彼女は今何人かの生徒さんを教えていますが、もうすこし空きがあるようですよ。　　

Happy Holidays! ・メリークリスマス

December 12th was the last day at the Hillsboro Winter Market. It was SO cold , but everyone there was in a good spirit. There was a great group of vendors. We entertained each other and traded items when the customer traffic was slow :-) I even learned how to crochet a pretty scarf, thanks to a woman who sells beautiful jewelries. I enjoyed a variety of musicians, too, although I felt bad that their fingers were probably frozen in the bitter cold... First pic shows the Christmas cookies my kids made yesterday. Cookie making is a lot like pottery :-) The other pics shows some of the new stuff I made for the market. It was a great year for Tohki-ya. I've met new customers and sales has at least tripled compared to last year (well... I didn't sell a whole a lot last year). I hope next year will be even more exciting! I wish everyone a merry Christmas and happy new year!

12月12日は今年最後のヒルズボロマーケットでした。　とても寒かったのですが、皆とても元気で良い感じで一年の締めくくりができました。　出店している皆が仲良くなって、お客さんの流れがのんびりの時にはおしゃべりしたり、物々交換をして楽しく過ごしました。　アクセサリーを売っている女性からは可愛いマフラーの編み方まで教わってしまいました　（’ｖ’）　寒さでギターを弾く手がかじかんでしまって可愛そうだったけど、いろんなミュージシャンの演奏を聴くのも楽しかったな～。　最初の写真は子供達が作ったクリスマスクッキーです。　クッキー作りは陶芸とちょっと似ているような気がする。　あとの3枚はマーケットのためにこの冬作ったものです。　今年は陶器屋にとってとても良い1年でした。　多分、去年と比べると売り上げが3倍以上にはなってます（とは言っても、去年はたいして売り上げがなかったんだけどね）。　来年はもっとエキサイティングな年になるといいな。　皆様に楽しいクリスマスと良いお年が来ることを願っています。

St. Pius Holiday Bazaar ・ クリスマスバザー

St. Pius Women's Club Holiday Bazaar ended today. It was my first time to participate in this, and I didn't know what to expect. I was very happy with the sales. I also enjoyed meeting the wonderful women who organize this bazaar. I am looking forward to the next year! All the carved bowl (wavy bowls) I had made were sold! Since there were many other vendors with interesting products, I was able to start my christmas shopping early. My kids got to see the Santa at the bazaar, too. They told Santa what they wanted for Christmas. My daughter wants a "barbie horse"( I need to do a little research to find out what it is...) and son wants an airplane.

St. Piusのクリスマスバザーが今日で終わりました。　私は始めての参加だったので、どれくらい売れるのか予想もつかなかったのですが、嬉しい売り上げがありました♪　このバザーの運営をしている素晴らしい人達と会えたことも嬉しかったです。　来年が楽しみです。　今までに作っておいた手彫りボール（波模様のボール)が全部売れました！　他に出展している人達も面白い作品を展示していたので、私もクリスマスプレゼントの買い物を早めに始めることができました。　遊びに来た子供達はサンタさんに会うこともできて大喜び。　早速クリスマスプレゼントのリクエストをしてました。　娘は“バービーのお馬さん”、息子は飛行機が欲しいそうです。
