This is a mug that survived in the kiln... I had made a set of four as a special order, but others had stuck on a kiln shelf and didn't make it :-( This survivor was meant to be used by a little girl, so it's petite ( 3~4 inches tall), and I really like it. The texture on the top portion is carved using a vegetable peeler. I had used this technique before, but this time, I had an awesome vegetable peeler to make my job a lot easier. This super peeler was given to me by a friend who just moved overseas. She had to get rid of things she couldn't take with her, and this peeler was one of them. She told me that her mom had used it before she did. For me to carve the clay, the peeler can't be too sharp or too dull. This one is just perfect! My wonderful teacher, Renee, told me that she always kept her eyes open for things (tools) that could be used in the studio. Chopsticks, pipes, piece of medical equipment, etc... Things that are not useful for someone else can be a treasure for me! I'm going to take care of my special peeler. Thanks, N-san!

このマグカップはサバイバーです。　特注のために4個セットを作ったのですが、残りの3つは窯にくっついてしまい、ダメになってしまいました（涙）　この生き残りちゃんは小さな子が使うことになっていたので、小さくて可愛いサイズです。　上のほうの粘土を野菜の皮剥き器で削ってあります。　この手法は以前もやったことがあるのですが、今回は最高の皮剥き器があったので、作業が楽でした。　このスーパー皮むき器は海外へ引越しをされてしまったお友達からいただいたものです。　彼女は持っていけないものを全て処分しなければならず、皮むき器もその一つでした。　彼女の前にはお母様がお使いになられていたそうです。　私が粘土を削る際、鋭すぎるものでも、切れないものでも作業は難しくなります。　この皮むき器がなんともちょうどいいんです！　私の恩師であるルネーさんが言っていたのですが、彼女はいつもスタジオで役に立ちそうなものを見つけるべく、目を光らせているそうです。　お箸、パイプ、医療機器の一部などなど、、、　他の人が便利だと感じないものでも、私にとっては宝物になることがあるんだな～。　このスペシャル皮剥き器、大事にします。　ありがとう、Nさん！

The end of the season ・ 夏マーケット最終日

Today was my last day at the Orenco Market for the summer of 2009. It has been a very encouraging season for me. Sales have gone up, and I have met new fabulous customers :-) I am planning to be at a few winter markets, starting November. I will have my schedule posted here soon. Pictures shows what I have been working on. Pitchers ( or teapots) and mugs are for special orders　( they are still greenwares). I finally learned how to throw pieces in same size & shape! Special orders can be challenging but fun. Ms. M, who had ordered a pitcher with a lid, has been giving me great ideas. It feels like I and Ms. M are creating this one of a kind pitcher together :-) "No Soliciting" and "Mahalo for removing your slippers" plaques are done with new vine pattern. The wall clock is one of my hand-carving experiments. Even though the summer market is over, I will be busy preparing for the holiday season. I will be posting more pics soon...

今日は私にとって（マーケット自体はまだ続いています）この夏のサンデーマーケットの最終日でした。　とてもやる気が出たシーズンでした。　売り上げも伸びたし、新しい素敵なお客様方とも会うことができました。11月からはいくつかの冬のマーケットに出店する予定です。　決まり次第このブルグで予定をお知らせします。　写真は最近作っているもの達です。　水差し（またはティーポット）・マグカップは特別注文のために作っています　（まだ粘土を乾かしている状態）。　やっとのことで同じサイズ・形のものを複数作ることができるようになりました。　Mさんが蓋付きの水差しを注文してくださったのですが、とても良いアイデアも沢山くださっています。　なんだか私とMさんの共同制作のようで楽しいです。　“押し売り禁止”と”靴を脱いでくれてありがとう”の壁掛けは新しい蔦の模様で作りました。　壁時計は手彫りの実験作品の一つです。　夏のマーケットは終わりましたが、これからはクリスマスシーズンに備えて準備に忙しくなります。　近いうちにもっと写真をのせらせると思います。　お楽しみに～！　　

Hot week ・暑いです～（汗）

Market today was GREAT! It was so nice to see some repeat customers. I really appreciate all the support from friends, as well as the Japanese community. Arigatou!! Pic on the left shows the most popular mug of the year. It's big & wide for all the coffee lovers out there :-) I made them last week, and three of them were sold today. The pic on the right shows my new "wave bowl". It has wavy curving neat the bottom. I have made several different shapes. I haven't decided which one I like the best...　My studio in the garage is SO hot... It's like a sauna. But I will be working all through this week, and should have more new stuff next week.

今日のマーケットは今までで最高の売り上げでした！　以前のお客様が今年も来てくださったのが嬉しかったです。　お友達や日本人コミュニティーの皆様からのサポートもとっても嬉しく思います。　有難うございます！　左の写真は今年一番人気のマグです。　大きくてコーヒー好きにはぴったりです。　先週作ったのですが、今日すでに3つ売れました。　もっと作らなくちゃ。　右の写真は新作の“波ボール”です。　下のほうに波のような模様が彫ってあります。　ためしにいろんな形のものを作ってみました。　どの形が一番良いか迷っています。 車庫のスタジオ、めっちゃ暑いです、、、　サウナのようです。　でも今週も作業を続けるので、来週また新しいものをお見せできると思います。　

Second year ・2年目

This is my second year at the Orenco Sunday Market. There have been a few moments of weakness when the sales weren't so great, but this past few weeks, it's been very encouraging :-) Even though I'm not a huge seller, I'm selling quite a bit more compared to the last year. My kids enjoy visiting the market and eating fresh berries, too. I have been experimenting with different texture. The mug in the back row in the pic shows the ones with ridges. I have been also making bowls with hand-carved waves. (pic will be here soon...) I have a feeling hand-carving might lead to finding "my own style"... Customers seem to like the business card holders, which can be used for a cell phone or glasses. I will be making more of them this week.

今年でオレンコ・サンデーマーケットも2年目、、、　売り上げがよくないときにはくじけそうになったりしたけど、ここ2・3週間は売れ行きがよくなってきてやる気が出てます。　私は売り上げトップの店ではないけれど、去年に比べると確実に伸びてきました。　子供達もマーケットに遊びに来て新鮮なベリーを食べるのを楽しみにしています。　いろんな表面装飾に挑戦しています。　写真の後ろの列にあるマグは轆轤で作業中に入れた筋が入っています。 彫刻等で波を彫ったボウルも作っています。　(写真はもうすぐアップします）　彫刻等を使った手彫りは“独自のスタイル”を生み出す鍵になるかな、と思っています。　お客様には名刺立ての評判がよいです。　名刺だけでなく、携帯や眼鏡置きにもお使いいただいています。　今週はもっと作るぞ～。　

First day at the market ・マーケット初日

Today was the first day at the Orenco Sunday Market. The first pic shows my new T-shirt with "Tohki-ya" on the back! My dear friend, K-san, sent it to me from Japan. It's hand painted and one of a kind! Arigatou, K-san! The people traffic was a little less than usual since the Rose Festival was going on this weekend. Sales was OK. I sold quite a few magnets and a few other things. My family came to hang out with me, and we had yummy fresh strawberries. Even though my daughter ate most of it, we all got a taste of early Oregon summer :-)

今日はOrencoサンデーマーケットの初日でした。　１枚目の写真は“陶器屋”のカッコいい文字が入った新しいシャツです！　お友達のKさんが日本から送ってくださいました。　世界でたった一枚の、とっても素敵な手書きのデザインです。　Kさん、ありがとう！　この週末はポートランド名物のローズフェスティバルが開催されていたせいか、人の流れがいつもよりも少なかったようです。　売り上げはまずまず、、、　マグネットがよく売れて、それ以外にも２～３点売れました。　家族が会いに来てくれて、みんなで新鮮な美味しいイチゴを食べました。　娘が独り占めしてほとんど食べてしまったのですが、みんなでオレゴンの初夏の味を楽しみました。　

Children's Day ・ 今日は子供の日

Today is the "Children's Day" for boys in Japan. People decorate their house ｓwith traditional boyish stuff, like armor and big koi fish shaped kites, and eat traditional sweets. Girl's day is March 3rd. I always thought boys got the better deal because this boy's day is in the middle of the Golden Week ( a long holiday). It's kind of sad that I tend to forget these Japanese holidays. Too many years away from Japan... Anyways, I will be starting the Sunday Market soon, and I am gearing up. I've been making more sushi plates, since they sold well last year. I also made a few lidded jars (second pic). They are small, about 4 inches tall, and have beads on the top. Lids are still very challenging to me... Round shaped mugs, like the last pic, are my new favorite. They are cute and hold a lot of java :-)

今日は日本では子供の日でした。　日本では男の子のために鎧兜やこいのぼりを飾って柏餅を食べたりするんですよね。　ちなみに女の子の日は３月３日。　子供の日はゴールデンウィークの真ん中だから私はいつも男の子の方が得だな～、と思ってました。　こういう日本の祭日のことをすっかり忘れてしまうようになったのはちょっと悲しいです。　日本から離れてから長くなってしまったからかな、、、　ところで、もうすぐサンデーマーケットが始まるので準備中です。　去年よく売れた寿司皿セットをもっと作りました。　そして蓋付き容器（２枚目の写真）にも挑戦しています。　高さ１０ｃｍくらいの小さいもので、蓋の上にビーズが付いています。　蓋は難しいので要練習です。　３枚目の写真のようなまるっこちいマグが最近気に入っています。　かわいいし、いっぱいコーヒーが入るのよ。

Ceramic Showcase ・ 陶芸展

The Ceramic Showcase was held at Oregon Convention Center in Portland today. It was my first time to visit and volunteer there. It was so amazing and inspiring to see and touch the wide variety of unique artworks! It was also great to see some friends there :-) I am already looking forward to be there next year. Pics above are some of my new stuff.

今日はポートランドのコンベンションセンターで陶芸展がありました。　私は行くのもボランティアをするのも始めてだったのですが、いろいろな個性的な作品の数々を見たり触れたりするのは感動的で、とても勉強になりました。　お友達も何人か来てくれて嬉しかったです。　来年が今から楽しみだな～。 上の写真は最近作ったものです。
