Gearing up for the holidays ・年末への準備始めました

I want to say thank you to all the customers who supported me during the market season. On my last day at Orenco Sunday Market, I had the best sales of this year :-) It was so nice to have some friends dropping by, too. Now, I am gearing up for the holiday season. I will be participating a few more holiday markets in different locations this year. I will post my schedule when I have the dates. This year, I have sold lots of pendants (first photo). They weren't selling that much last year, but I couldn't make fast enough this year. They are made with recycled clay, and are so much fun to make since I can use interesting glaze combinations. The second pic shows the bowls I made for a special order. Ms. Y ordered these bowls since she could not find the perfect sized bowls for noodle soup anywhere else. I hope Ms. Y will enjoy many bowls of nice hot soup this winter :-)
今期のマーケットで応援してくださった皆様にお礼を申し上げます。　オレンコ・マーケットでの今期最終日では今年一番の売り上げがありました♪　お友達が何人か立ち寄ってくださったのも嬉しかったです。　さて、そろそろ年末の準備を始めております。　今年は新しい場所でのクリスマスマーケットに参加する予定です。　スケジュールが決まり次第こちらでお知らせします。　今年は最初の写真のようなペンダントが評判でした。　去年まではそうでもなかったのですが、今年は生産が間に合わないくらいでした。　リサイクルの粘土で作られていて、しかも、いろんな釉の組み合わせを使えるので楽しく作っています。　2枚目の写真は特別注文の器です。　どこを探してもラーメンなどにちょうどいい大きさの器がないので、、、とおっしゃるYさんから御注文いただきました。　この冬、Yさんがあつあつのラーメンをたっぷり召し上がれますように♪　

Already August? ・ あっという間に八月、、、

I can't believe it's already August... Where did the summer go? Sunny hot days are so precious here in Oregon, and we are not having too many of them this year. Even in this short, not-so-hot summer, beer tasts great. I've been lucky to have a great beer guy (vendor) next to me all summer. Captured by Porches Brewing Company makes great beer with 98% organic ingredients. Occational tasting of their beer during the market inspired me to make these tall cups (first pic). I gave one of them to my husband for his birthday, and he enjoyed his birthday beer in it :-) I used the new glazes on them, and I like how they turned out. The second pic shows soap dishes. I know... They are a little too big... Smaller ones are coming soon. The last picture shows my new carving pattern. Carving leather-hard clay is so peaceful and meditating. I really enjoy it.

もう8月です。。。　夏は一体何処へ行ってしまったんでしょう？　オレゴンでは晴れた暑い日がとっても貴重。　しかも今年は例年よりもさらにそんな日が少ないような気がします。　短く生ぬるい夏とはいえ、それでもビールは美味い！　この夏ずっと、嬉しいことにマーケットでのお隣さんがビール屋さんでした。　Captured by Porches Brewing Company　は９８％オーガニックの材料を使った美味しいビールを造っています。　マーケット出店中にたま～にいただくサンプルのビールにひらめきを感じ、1枚目の写真のような背の高いカップを作ってみました。　旦那の誕生日に一つプレゼントしたら、お誕生会で早速このカップを使ってビールを飲んでました。　新しい釉を使ってみたのですが、綺麗な色が出たので嬉しいです♪　2枚目の写真は石鹸置き。　そうです、、、　ちょっと大きすぎました。。。　もう少し小さいのを目下製作中です。　最後の写真は新しい彫りの模様です。　生乾きの粘土を彫るのってすごく気持ちいいんです。　瞑想にふけっているような気持ちになれて大好きです。

Testing new glaze ・新しい釉のテスト

Awesome colors!!! I ran a test on new glazes I purchased from my glaze guru in Japan, Mr. Munakata. This one called "Hyouretsu (cracking ice)" is a versatile glaze, which can be used on top of any glaze to create interesting effect on the bottom of a bowl when applied thick. It looks like a piece of glacier sitting in the bowl. Also, in combination with certain glaze, it creats such wonderful colors. The first pic shows the result of the test. I can't wait to use it on my new pieces :-) I have been working on soap dishes ( on costomer's request) and tall, skinny, goblet-like cups ( similar to milkshake glasses). They will be very cool with this new glaze, I think. The Orenco Sunday Market has been pretty good. (except for the first day when it was pouring rain...) It's so nice to have repeater costomer who has been enjoying my piece they purchased in the past. Due to the family vacation and my interpreting job, I only have three Sundays left at this market: July 25th, August 15th and 29th. After that, I will be gearing up for the holiday sales. The last two pictures show my teapots. They are still challenging to make, but I'm getting the hang of it :-)
綺麗な色達に大興奮!!　日本で宗像先生から購入した新しい釉をテストしました。　゛氷裂貫入釉”というものは、他の釉に重ねて厚塗りすることによって、器の底に面白い効果が出ます。　いろんな色の上に幅広く使えます。　器の底に氷河のかけらが入っているみたいです。　また、他の色との相性によって、組み合わせるとなんとも綺麗な色が出るのです♪　最初の写真はそのテストの結果です。　最近、石鹸置き(お客様のリクエスト）と背の高い、細身のカップ(ミルクシェークのグラスみたいな形です）を作っているのですが、氷裂を使ったら綺麗にできそうだな～♪　オレンコのサンデー・マーケットは初日の大雨だった日を除いては好調です。　過去に買っていただいた器を愛用してくださっているお客様が戻ってきてくれるのは本当に嬉しいです。　家族の夏休み旅行や、通訳の仕事のため、この夏マーケットに参加できるのはあと3回になってしまいました。　7月25日、8月１５と29日です。　その後はクリスマスシーズンに向けて在庫作りに励みます。　あと2枚の写真は急須です。　まだつくるのが難しいのですが、ちょっとずつコツがつかめてきました。　

Back from Japan ・ 日本から戻りました～

Back to cold, rainy Oregon... My head is still spinning from jet lag... I came back from Japan 3 days ago, with great memories of family and friends. They made this trip so special for us. We can't see them until the next trip to Japan, but all the laughter and energy they gave us will be with us always. I went to the Design Festa in Tokyo Big Sight, to see my friend, Rica. This is a huge art festival that has over 8500 artists participating from all over Asia. Rica's booth looked awesome, and it was so much fun and stimulating to see other artist's work. Can't wait to test them out :-) Another great find in Japan was a band called Kariyushi 58. I LOVE their song called "Owari Hajimari (the end, the beginning)! It reminds me of very important things about life. Today was the first day of Orenco Market. Unfortunately, it was pouring rain and I only sold a mug :-( But Kariyushi 58's song keeps my spirits up! Pictures show some of my new stuff, including Amigurumi animals. I will be at the market on Sundays until the end of August. I hope it will be a great season!

寒い、雨降りのオレゴンに帰ってきました。　まだ時差ぼけで頭がくるくるです。　3日前に日本での家族・友達との沢山の思い出と共に、帰国したばかりです。　今回の旅は家族・友達のおかげでとても思い出深いものとなりました。　次回の日本まで会えないけれど、みんなにもらった笑い声とエネルギーはいつも一緒です！　友達のりかちゃんに会うために東京ビッグサイトで開催されたデザイン・フェスタに行きました。　りかちゃんのブース、最高でした。　そして他のアーティストの作品を見て回るのも楽しくて刺激たっぷりでした。　何という(良い意味で)狂気の沙汰！　http://www.designfesta.com/index.htmlを見てくださいね。　りかちゃんの新しい商品がもうすぐ完成します。　彼女のイラストが入った生地がネット販売されます。　可愛くて子供服や子供部屋にぴったりです。　http://rica-asanuma.sblo.jp/を見てね。　そして、私の゛うわぐすりの神”である宗像先生から新しい色を3色ゲットしてきました。　早く試したいな～♪　日本でのもう一つの嬉しい発見が゛かりゆし５８”というバンド。　彼らの゛オワリはじまり”っていう歌が大好きです。　人生で何が大切なのか思い出させてくれます。　今日はオレンコ・マーケットの初日でしたが、あいにくの大雨(涙）　マグが1つ売れただけでした(号泣）でも、゛オワリはじまり”を歌ってがんばるのだ～！　写真は新しくマーケットに加えた作品です。　編みぐるみもあるよ～♪　8月の終わりまでマーケットに出展します。　良いシーズンになりますように。。。　

Mom is a cup maker ・ お母さんはカップ職人

Renee's One Woman Show was awesome! Lots of customers and great music/food/drink. I added a piece in my collection, too. Her bowls are amazingly thin and beautiful. We get to see more of her work at the Ceramic Showcase at the Oregon Convention Center on April 3o, May 1, and 2nd. The Showcase is the largest pottery show in North America. I am leaving this week to visit Japan for 6 weeks. Kids and I are very excited to see friends and family there. By the way, my kids thinks that my job is "to make and sell cups". When we found a book called "A Cup for Everyone"at the library, they just fell in love with it. The author is a young Japanese artist, Yusuke Yonezu. It's a great book! We loved it so much that we had to get our own copy. In the book, Pucca, a little penguin boy, makes beautiful cups that look like his friends. My daughter was very inspired and made one herself. ルネーの個展はとても素晴らしかったです。　沢山のお客様、素敵な音楽、美味しい食べ物と飲み物、、、私も自分のコレクションにもう1点追加しました。　彼女の作るボールはとても薄くて美しく、使いやすいんです。　彼女の作品は4月３０、5月1，2日にオレゴン・コンベンションセンターで開かれるセラミック・ショーケースという陶器展でも見ることが出来ます。　この陶器店は北米で一番大きな展示会です。　このサイトで詳しい情報をご覧ください。http://www.oregonpotters.org/ceramicshowcase/index.htm　　私もこの陶器展を楽しみにしていたのですが、今年は残念ながら参加できなくなってしまいました。　今週から6週間、日本に一時帰国します。　子供達もお友達や親戚に会えるのを楽しみにしています。　ところで、私の子等は私のことを“カップを作る・売る人”だと思っています。　なので、図書館でこの本を見つけたときには一目で気に入ってしまいました。　若き日本人アーティスト、米津祐介さんの作品です。　とっても良い絵本なのでお勧めします！　お話の中で、小さなペンギンの男の子、プッカがいろいろな動物の形の可愛いカップをつくります。　わが娘もプッカに刺激を受けて、フラミンゴのカップを作ってみました♪　米津祐介さんは4月２０～25日に東京で個展を開かれます。　詳しいことはこちらのウェブサイトをごらんください。　http://yonezoo.com/

Renee's One Woman Show ・ ルネーの展示会

I just want to spread the word! Renee is having her One Woman Show on April 1st, Thursday at the Local Discoveries (1627 NE Alberta St, Portland). The reception is held from 5pm to 9pm. There will be her new wonderful creations and a classical guitarist, Michael Baker, accompanied by hors d'oeuvre. It will be fun :-) I visited her studio this week and was amazed by the quality and quantity of new art work she has been working on. Can't wait!

今日はルネーの展示会のお知らせです。　4月1日、木曜日にローカル・ディスカバリー（1627　NE Alberta St. Portland) にて午後5時から9時までレセプションが行われます。　彼女の素敵な新作がたっぷり見られるうえに、クラシックギター奏者のマイケル・ベーカーの演奏、オードブルなどをお楽しみいただけます。　楽しみだな～♪　今週、ルネーのスタジオを訪ねてみましたが、彼女が手がけている新作の質と量にびっくりしてしまいました。　待ちきれません。

Clay is reborn! ・ よみがえれ！ 粘土よ！

Spring is finally here... almost. I'm so happy that it's getting comfortable to work in the studio. No more frozen clay! Talking about the clay, it's so nice that clay can be recycled. All the scrap clay can be hydrated and reconstituted to create more stuff! All those poor bowls that collapsed or flew off the wheel during throwing, and even the shavings from trimming can be reborn. The first pic shows the dry scrap (on the right) and the hydrated goo (on the left). When the goo is placed on a plaster, moisture gets sucked out of it, and after some kneading on the plaster, you have perfectly usable clay :-) No waste is a great thing! 春がやっと来ました、、、って言うのはまだ早いかな。　スタジオでの作業がずいぶん楽にできるようになりました。　凍った粘土ともさよならよ！　粘土といえば、、、嬉しいことに、粘土ってリサイクルできるんです。　作業中に出たクズ粘土は全て再度水に浸してもどし、再構成されて新しい作品を作るのに使えるのです！　ろくろの上で潰れたり、ろくろに振り飛ばされたりしたかわいそうな器達、、、そして削りの時に出た鰹節のようなカスまでもが生まれ変わることができるのです。　最初の写真の右にあるのが乾いた粘土クズ、左が水に浸してあるドロドロ粘土です。　このドロドロを石膏の上にねかせて水分を取り除き、石膏の上でこねるとあ～ら不思議、ちゃんとした粘土の出来上がり～♪　無駄が無いのは良いことですよね。　他の写真は最近作ったものです。
