Learning about the planets ・ 惑星について学ぶ

My daughter was learning about the planets at her preschool. She learned a great deal about them that she was teaching her parents about a thing or two, such as "Pluto is NOT a planet!" and "It's very hot on Mars!". Since I have a kiln sitting in the garage, I was able to contribute to her preschool when the kids made planets with clay. The pic on the left shows the ones I made as samples. On the right are my daughter's creations. Yes, I know the planets don't have dots and swirls, but it's good to have imaginations, right? (I just couldn't recall how they looked like...) Kids made really cool planets! Bright and colorful. It's fun to see what kids can come up with.

娘がプりスクールで惑星について学んでいました。　随分いろんなことを教えてもらったようで、親の私達にも、“冥王星は惑星じゃないんだよ”とか“火星はすごく暑いんだよ”と教えてくれました。　私はガレージの窯を生かして、子供達の惑星粘土細工のお手伝いをしました。　左の写真は私がサンプルとして作ったもので、右の写真は娘の作品です。　はい、惑星に水玉模様や渦巻きがないのはわかっています、、、でもイマジネーションを持つのは良いことでしょ？（というか、惑星がどんな色なのか全然思い出せなかったんです） 子供達はとてもおもしろい作品を作りました！　鮮やかでカラフルで、、、　子供の創造力にはいつも感心してしまいます。　

Almost spring （やっとのことで）もうすぐ春です

It's been a while since my last posting... I was never good at keeping a diary. I was plugging along all winter, though. I experimented new glaze and shapes, practice, practice and practice on the wheel. These are some of my new stuff. The first two pics shows Mr. Munakata's glaze. I fired them at cone 7, higher than my usual. I liked how the color turned out :-) During the winter, I was able to spend quality studio time with Renee, one of my teachers, and she showed me more techniques and tips. I enjoyed seeing her work, as well as all the chat we had. I also joined Oregon Potters Association. OPA has informative meetings, news letters and video library for members, and their biggest event, Ceramic Showcase, is coming up soon. It will be held at Oregon Convention Center on April 24, 25, 26. There will be over 200 Oregon potters showing and selling their work, demonstrations from different artist, kids/adult clay play area, and more! It will be fun. 前回の書き込みから随分たちました、、、　昔から日記をつけるのが苦手でした。　わはは。　書き込みは無かったものの、この冬も陶芸三昧していました。　新しい釉や形を試したり、ろくろの練習をしていました。　最初の２枚の写真は宗像先生の釉を使ったものです。　普段のCone 6よりも少し熱い温度で焼きました。　綺麗な色が出たので嬉しいです。　冬の間、私の師匠の一人であるルネーとスタジオでいろいろ教えていただくことができて、また少しコツがつかめてきた気がします。　ルネーの紹介でオレゴン陶芸協会（OPA)にも入りました。　OPAではメンバーのために役に立つミーティング、ニュースレター、ビデオライブラリーがあり、４月２４～２５日にはOPAの一番大きなイベントであるセラミック・ショーケースがあります。　２００以上ものオレゴンの陶芸家が作品を展示・販売します。　アーティストのデモや、大人と子供が粘土で遊べるエリアなど盛りだくさんで楽しくなりそうです。　入場は無料です。　詳しくは　www.caramicshowcase.com　をご覧ください。　今年も去年と同じサンデーマーケットに申し込みました。　６月から９月まで出店する予定です。　楽しみだな～♪

Cold enough?? ・ 寒さにも負けず、、、

December 13th was the last day of Hillsboro Winter Market. Probably because of the snow forecast, there was not much people traffic, but my sales was OK. What made my day even better was the wonderful musician who was playing music right next to me all day. John Twist plays guitar, banjo and mandolin so gracefully, like the instruments are part of him. I enjoyed his music so much that I bought his CD. He played only instrumental at the market, but you can hear him sing on his CD. Check out www.johntwist.net for more info. I was a little sad that the market is over until next spring, but I was very happy to pack up at the end of the day, because it was SOOOOO cold!!!! I am going to be building up my inventory for the next season. I have ideas for new creations. I just need to figure out how to work in my freezing garage without freezing my @@@ off....

１２月１３日は今年最後のヒルズボロ・ウィンター・マーケットでした。　雪の予報が出ていたせいか、人出はあまりなかったのですが、売り上げはまずまずでした。　この日をとても楽しくしてくれたのは、私の隣で１日中素晴らしい音楽を演奏してくれていたミュージシャンです。　ジョン・トウィストさんはギター・バンジョー・マンダリンをまるで自分の体を一部であるように優雅に演奏します。　彼の音楽がとても気に入ったので、CDを買いました。　www.johtwist.net　で詳しいことをチェックしてみてください。　来年の春までマーケットがなくなってしまうのはちょっと寂しかったけど、片付けをしてたときはほっとしました。　だってめっちゃ寒かったんです～！　これからは来期のために作品を増やしていこうと思います。　新作のアイデアもあるのですが、一体あの激寒のガレージでどうやったら凍らずに作業できるかが問題です、、、

New stuff ・ 新作

Here are some of the new stuff I have made recently. The bottom pic is cereal bowls. They are special order for Christmas gift. Each bowl is personalized inside (on the bottom of the bowl) and has drawings of things that mean a lot to the person. It was a lot of fun coming up with the design and drawing :-) I really liked this blue stripe patten, so I made more (second pic). I did ok at the Hillsboro Winter Market last week, considering little people traffic we had. I will be there this weekend, too. Drop by!

最近作ったものです。　３枚目の写真はクリスマスギフト用に特別注文でお作りしたシリアルボールです。　それぞれのボールの底にはお名前とその方が大好きなものの絵が描いてあります。　デザインを考えたりするのは楽しかったし、勉強になりました。　この青の縞模様が気に入ったので、違うものも作ってみました　（真ん中の写真）。　先週のヒルズボロ・ウィンターマーケットでは、人出が少なかったわりにはまずまずの売り上げでした。　今週も出店しています。　ぜひお立ち寄りください！　

Winter Market in Hillsboro ・ ヒルズボロ・ウィンターマーケット

I hope everybody had a nice Thanksgiving. We had an awesome dinner with friends. Ron cooked stuffed pork with all the Thanksgiving usuals. Yum! I've been testing Mr. Munakata's glaze, and it will be great once I figure out the proper application :-) I'm almost there... I will be at the Hillsboro Winter Market from this Saturday until mid December. It is located in the Civic Center parking garage. If you are in the neighborhood, drop by!

皆さんサンクス・ギビングはいかがでしかた？　我が家ではお友達を招いての楽しいディナーをしました。　ロンは今年は中にマッシュルームなどを詰め込んで焼いた豚肉、そしてサンクス・ギビングおなじみのサイドディッシュ（インゲンのクリーム焼き、ベークド・スイートポテト等）を張り切って作ってくれました。　美味しかった～！　むなかた先生の釉をテストしているところです。　ちょうどいいアプリケーションの仕方を習得したら、作品に生かせていけると思います。　もうちょっとです、、、　今週土曜日から１２月半ばまで、ヒルズボロのウィンターマーケットに出店します。　シビックセンターの車庫で開催していますので、お近くにいらした際にはぜひ遊びに来てくださいね。

Highly recommended music: The Blue Hearts ・ ザ・ブルーハーツのすすめ

I want to tell you about this Japanese punk rock band (yes, there is a such thing), The Blue Hearts. They had a huge hit in Japan a long time ago. 10 or 20 years ago... I can't remember. My best friend gave me their current CD when I was in Japan, and I have been listening to it every time I work in the studio. I wish my English speaking friends can listen to it, too, because it's AWESOME! The lyric is so powerful. When you feel like you don't know who you are any more, or your days are so boring that you feel like jello is coming out of your nose, listen to The Blue Hearts! Working in my studio is a lot more fun with good music. I'm working on making test tiles (to test Mr. Munakata's glazes) and special order cereal bowls for a special customer. My studio is so cold (I have to wear snow pants), but I'm having a lot of fun!

今日は皆さんにザ・ブルーハーツのお勧めです。　あのヒット曲があったのはいつの日だったか、、、１０年前？２０年前？　今回日本で私の親友が最近のCDをくれたんです。　それ以来、スタジオで作業するときにはずっと聞いています。　私のアメリカ人のお友達も聞けたらいいのにな。　だって最高だよ！　詩がすごいパワフルです。　自分が何者なのかふと分からなくなってしまった時や、まるで鼻から寒天がゆ～っくりと出てくるようなのっぺりとした日々をすごしているあなた！　ぜひブルーハーツを聞きましょう！　スタジオでの作業も良い音楽があるともりもり楽しくなります。　今はむなかた先生の釉を試すためのタイルやとても良いお客様からの特別注文のシリアルボールを作っています。　スタジオはかなり寒くてスキーパンツをはかないといけないんだけど、ノリノリで仕事がはかどります♪

Back from Japan ・日本に行ってきました

It's been almost 2 months from the last posting... I was in Japan from mid Sep. and came back a few days ago. So much has happened! Where should I begin... Oh, my last day at the market went well. I had a busy yet fun filled summer thanks to the market. Can't wait for the next season. I had another awesome pottery lesson with Meaghan before leaving for Japan. She showed me how to throw bowls, how to use ribs and other tools, and more on centering. I will glaze and fire the pieces I made during the lesson, as soon as kids and I get over jet lag :-) Japan trip was so much fun! We took a trip on a bullet train to the western Japan to visit friends, and Ron's surf buddy took us along for a surfing trip to Izu. We spent rest of the time to see friends and family. They are the ones who made this trip so special. I want to thank every one of them. Another special person I met was Mr. Munakata, who not only teaches pottery classes, but mixes and sells his own glaze. My best friend, Rica, has been taking his class for 12 years. I was stunned by the number of different glazes he creates. Over 150 beautiful colors! I ordered a few and brought them back to the states (All his glaze is made to order! Mr. Munakata, who used to be a chemist at a pharmaceutical company, says that he doesn't keep them in stock because glaze works better if it's fresh). Since the glaze is made to work best at slightly higher temperature (cone 7 or 8, which Japanese potters typically use), I need to experiment a bit. Can't wait to test them out! I need to add a little on Mr. Munakata: an awesome potter, glaze maker, who can also read bar codes... He has the "mad scientist" look to him, and he is always working on gazillions of projects, from making preserved flowers to collecting model trains. He is so kind and charming, that anyone who meets his would be hooked :-) I am so looking forward to email him the result of my glaze experiments. I hope the jet lag will go away soon...

前回の書き込みから２ヶ月もたってしまいました。　９月中旬から１ヵ月半、日本に里帰りしていました。いろんなことがあって、どこから始めたら良いものやら、、、　マーケットの最終日はまずまずの出来でした。　マーケットのおかげで、忙しいながらも楽しい夏でした。　来年のシーズンが始まるのが楽しみだな。　日本へ発つ前に、ミーガンさんのレッスンを受けることもできました。　大きめのボールをへらなどを使って作るやりかたや、中心をとるときのコツを教えていただきました。　私と子供達の時差ぼけが治り次第、そのときに作った作品を焼きます。　楽しみです！　日本の旅はと～っても楽しかったです。　新幹線で関西のお友達に会いに行ったり、Ron の親友が伊豆までのサーフィン旅行に連れて行ってくれたりで幕を開け、その後は懐かしい友達や家族と過ごすことができました。　友達・家族の皆さんのおかげでこの旅がとても楽しく思い出深いものとなりました。　皆さん、ありがとうございました。　もう一つ、特別な出会いがありました。　むなかた先生は、陶芸教室を教えるだけでなく、御自身で釉を作って日本中に販売していらっしゃいます。　私の親友、りかちゃんも、１２年ずっと先生の教室へ通っています。　先生がお作りになる釉の種類の多さにびっくりしました。　１５０以上あるそうです！　私も気に入った３色と化粧土を購入して、オレゴンに持ってかえりました。　（むなかた先生の釉は注文があってから作られます。　以前製薬会社の技術者であった先生は、釉は新鮮なほうが良いので、在庫は置かない、とおっしゃっていました）　釉はアメリカで一般的に焼かれる温度よりも高い温度で一番良い結果が出るように作られているので、（日本ではアメリカよりも高い温度で陶器を焼くそうです）私の粘土と温度に合うかどうかの実験が必要です。　どんな結果がでるか楽しみだな！　ちょっとここで、、、素晴らしい陶芸家であり、釉作りの名人であり、そしてバーコードも読んでしまうむなかた先生について書きたいと思います。　先生は御茶ノ水博士のようなルックスで、いつもたくさんのプロジェクトに楽しそうに熱中しています。　私が訪ねたときには、プリザーブドフラワー（綺麗です）作りや、鉄道模型（かなり本格的です）を見せてくださいました。　とっても優しくて、魅力たっぷりの先生には、会う人みんなぐっときてしまいます。　これから釉の実験結果をメールでやりとりするのが楽しみです。　スタジオで作業ができるように、時差ぼけ治ってくれ～。
